Grants & Funding Facts
Finding and identifying the several different government agencies that give
grants for particular reasons in specific subject areas requires time,
effort, and some research. Here, you will find a starting point for knowing
where to look for it.
If you’ve been seeking funding for an existing or new for-profit business,
you might find that it is more difficult in finding and obtaining grant
funding. Government grants are generally (though not necessarily always)
given to non-profit organizations for programs and services that will
benefit the community or the public as a group.
The first place that you should look for government grants is with the
U.S. Government's Website. This site will assist you
to be able to electronically find and apply for the various different
grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies.
You will also be able to look for information on the different kinds of
grants and the government agencies that issue grants. Further, you can sign
up in order to receive instant notification of future grant opportunities
that you might find in your inbox. You can also take a look at the
Government's Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA), which hosts a
very complete listing of various Government grants as well as other types
of help which might be available.
This guide is where you can obtain information on grants by Category and
Topic Area or you can search the Catalog by key words etc. if you find it
easier in that way. If you find a specific grant that might interest you,
then try to make sure that you carefully read the section on Eligibility
Requirements in order to find out if you would be qualified to apply for
that specific grant.
You should also bear in mind that most government grants are not available
throughout the year. This implies that you cannot apply for most of them at
any time that you feel like it, you can apply for them only when they are
announced by a Government agency.
When an agency makes their money available for a grant, it will usually put
an announcement in the Federal Register which is published every week day.
This is where you can find the Government's Most Recent Grant
Announcements.
Grants which are offered to individuals are generally given to them for
educational support (financial aid), for artistic purposes, and various
other types of research, although some agencies will give away grants to
individuals for other purposes as well.
You must of course know that getting a grant is very hard work. You
shouldn’t ever be fooled by advertisements and promotions that state that
you can get free cash just by writing a letter. There is a lot of
competition out there for grant funds. If you want to be successful in
obtaining a grant, you must then provide the funding agency with a very
good proposal that explains your objectives and also offers a plan and a
detailed budget plan for your activities.
Grants are only free in that you don’t have to pay the money back.
Nevertheless, if you are given a grant you might be required to provide
some progress reports, program evaluation, and/or financial reports to the
government agency that will issue the grant.
